Are you familiar with the term not in my backyard or sometimes called NIMBY? Here is a great example where it actually has a positive spin!
Something very amazing happened just a short while ago that helped me to learn a huge lesson. There is a saying, “not in my backyard”, which we’ve always referred to as NIMBY. I have been hearing it for decades, but it has always seemed to have been used in the negative context of, “I don’t want that built in my backyard”, or some such thing. I remember referring to “not in my backyard” when I came home from a long trip five or six years ago late one night and, upon waking, looked out my rear window to see the woods had been taken down to build a house – virtually in my backyard. I immediately thought “NIMBY” and put my house on the market (I ended up staying for five more years). For many years I had experienced a dense wooded area with no houses in sight. Now I live with a house out my rear window. Yes, negative connotations.
Not in my backyard – NIMBY – with a positive spin!
