P. T. Barnum is crediting for having said:
“Do not scatter your powers. Engage in one kind of business only, and stick to it faithfully until you succeed, or until your experience shows that you should abandon it. A constant hammering on one nail will generally drive it home at last, so that it can be clinched. When a man’s undivided attention is centered on one object, his mind will constantly be suggesting improvements of value, which would escape him if his brain was occupied by a dozen different subjects at once.”

P. T. Barnum’s Time Management Tip: Focus

To paraphrase, P. T. Barnum’s time management tip dictates that you must focus in order to be successful. It’s a simple concept to understand but a difficult one to master. Now, let’s consider P. T. Barnum’s time management tip in the context of small businesses like mine, where multi-tasking and time-blocking are common time management strategies frequently employed.

Time Management Tip: Focus and Multi-Tasking

There are many people who feel that there really is no such thing as a human’s ability to multi-task. Perhaps computers can do this – perhaps even efficiently – but when it comes to doing more than one thing at a time, humans flop. (Let’s exclude the notion of accomplishing multiple things – “multi-tasking” – through the use of modern conveniences. For example, doing laundry and putting together a new marketing campaign at the same time is not really multi-tasking since, after all, a machine is likely doing the actual washing, not the so-called multi-tasker.) Some argue, “multi-taskers excel only at mediocrity.”

The power in this time management tip of focus lies in honing in on one thing at a time and doing whatever that is until it’s finished. There is an enormous time efficiency realized in not having to flip back and forth, having to start up again each time. If you can maintain focus to the completion of a task, clarity will be maintained and it will be completed more quickly.

There is little room for mediocrity in small business.

Time Management Tip: Focus and Time-Blocking

Being able to focus and finish the task at hand, AND build time into your day – that is what is required to master your most important tasks.

“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Louis Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.” Whew! Ben Kinney, a unique thinker, says, “If you don’t get it done by noon, you’re just a loser.” Harsh! Nonetheless, the top 20% of your peers likely stay laser focused through mid-day and then the rest of the day is theirs to enjoy!

Time Management Tip: Focus Supports Your Why

Of course, purpose fuels effort, plain and simple. Why are you doing what you’re doing? When you figure that out and find your passion for what you’re doing to fund that purpose – every day is a magnificent day!

Go out and begin your mastery of the one thing that will make a difference in your business this year. The canvas is clean! Paint something magical!

When asked to answer the question, “What is Isagenix?” I couldn’t help myself from answering from my personal perspective. I hope you can appreciate my perspective.
I have gone through a major transformation. It began around two and half years ago and it has been profound. Just three years ago I walked into my doctor’s office for my physical and he sighed, “you have to lose weight”. Of course I knew that, but he was compelled to tell me because my blood work results on the chart that he was staring at were displaying borderline signs of the typical American male in his fifties – overweight, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and all of the markers of a long, slow decay. He sees it all of the time. His first thoughts were to put me on a collection of pharmaceuticals. To avoid that slow death, I knew I had to do something more than the ineffectual starvation type of diet, so I began to look around for a solution. This is when I was told about Isagenix. “What is Isagenix?” Those were the first words out of my mouth.

What is Isagenix?

That is what everyone asks when they look at me now, down twenty-five pounds consistently for years, normal in my other blood indicators, and filled with boundless energy. Even my doctor looks at me and exclaims “Wow! I tell people to do these things, but no one seems to be able to, yet you did it. Is MLM a Scam?

Well, here is the dirty, low-down truth…

Is Multilevel Marketing a Scam?

YES! … And … No. You see – Is Multilevel Marketing a Scam? – it’s not a really easy question to answer, mostly because the answer is subjective. Some people that have “dabbled” (for days or years) with MLM – not a truly fair perspective from which to assess, to be fair – may feel they have been scammed due to their lack of success. Others may feel that MLM is entirely legitimate due to their success. The vast majority sit somewhere in between. One might argue, as a result, that those who fail feel Multilevel Marketing is a scam and those that succeed feel that it is legitimate. Is that entirely different from any money-related venture?

Here’s a similar scenario: someone gets their oil changed at the local jiffy-oil-change-shop. They’re told they need a new “this” and they need “that” changed as well. They leave the jiffy-oil-change-shop having spent much more than they budgeted. They felt scammed because perhaps they didn’t need a new “this” or changed “that”. While jiffy-oil-change-shop is a legitimate business to many, someone felt scammed.

It’s the same with Multilevel Marketing.

Now, to be fair, there probably are some less-than-legitimate Multilevel Marketing “opportunities” out there so you absolutely must do your due diligence before partnering with the “next greatest thing”. I don’t know any such questionable organizations off hand and I haven’t gotten burned – ever – in this industry. But I did my homework and, though I didn’t start my Multilevel Marketing “career” where I am today, I am certainly happy with my choices and am downright ecstatic to have partnered with a company as great as Isagenix today. Be sure to read my post, “Why Isagenix?” to understand my perspective.

Is Multilevel Marketing a Scam? As with all small business ventures, it is what you make of it.

Fact of the matter is that some small businesses succeed and become a Google or an Apple, while others can’t keep their doors open for an entire year. Is Multilevel Marketing a Scam? From some perspectives, it doesn’t even matter. You get out of your Multilevel Marketing business what you put into your Multilevel Marketing business. As a Multilevel Marketing Associate, Consultant, etc (different organizations have different terms for their distributors) you need to treat your business as a business, not a hobby. If you truly do, you will reap the rewards.

So, for me, the answer to the question, Is Multilevel Marketing a Scam? – it is absolutely not a scam. Multilevel Marketing is the real deal and holds the potential to support every dream you’re willing to chase.

She’s honest – giving you equal doses of good, bad, and ugly – but, suffice it to say, if she were asked the question, “Is Multilevel Marketing a Scam?” – well, see for yourself…

The Multilevel Marketing Profession/Industry Has…

No Boss • No Employees • No long commutes • No traffic jams • No cost-of-entry barrier • No educational requirements • No previous experience necessary • Little to no overhead expenses • Little to no risk • No limits to growth • No begging for raises • No need for real estate capital • No barriers based on race, gender or age • No shipping • No inventory • No product development • Little to no customer service • Huge tax advantages • A supportive team that you choose and that chooses you – team mates who share common goals and dreams • A win/win/win for all.

Read this list. Read it again.

You know what most, if not all, of these advantages are! You have said them to yourself – I know I have – but when I saw them all listed in one place – almost taking up a whole page in Drew’s book – YouOnLine/YouOffLine – I was very impressed!

If you are speaking to someone about an income/business opportunity and they are not impressed with this list – the best word to use is NEXT – they just don’t get it and you are probably wasting too much time trying to convince them.

Print and post and carry this list – remind yourself how multilevel marketing can free you and those who come on board with you – to be able to do what they want, when they want, with whom they want, wherever they want!

And, to be sure, there is work involved. We don’t spring fully formed as a successful network marketer. We do have to go through the trials and errors, the growth and development, and the ups and downs/the highs and the lows. But for those of us who see the potential – who have the dream – who have the faith, trust and belief in ourselves, our company, our profession, our products – the future is bright and we keep on keeping on.

The only way to fail in Multilevel Marketing is to quit. If you don’t quit – if you stay in the game – if you say hi to just one more person, and then one more person, and one more person again – you will find those that feel the same as you do – and they will become best friends – business partners – people you want to walk on the beaches of the world with.

Remember what we have here – it’s a real honest to goodness way to live the life and lifestyle of your dreams. You deserve to make the time to make the dream come true.

If you are in business for yourself and you want to build your online presence you know that it’s wise to make a Facebook Like page for personal or business branding. After all, Facebook is here to stay and it is something that you have to reckon with. No matter what business you are in, the main thing that you have to build is your brand. You have to become accessible to the public in such a way that people will think of you when they need the product or service that you offer. You have to become the go-to expert and consistently be appearing in their sphere of awareness. Maybe it’s a great thing, or maybe it’s a sad state of affairs, but most people spend a lot of time on Facebook. No matter how you feel about it, you have to build your professional presence within the Social Media sphere and, if you make a Facebook Like page, you’ll find it to be a great place to begin.

In the days before you had to make a Facebook Like page…

It used to be de rigueur that a brand was built through advertising and marketing utilizing expensive, repetitive and targeted media, but offline media, such as print ads, billboards, radio, television, newspapers, etc. With the advent of Social Media on the Internet there is now a way of building a brand that has very little upfront costs and virtually no ongoing expenses, except for your time (which should be valued at $500 or more when you are thinking like a millionaire!). Simply make a Facebook Like page!

Branding yourself on the Internet

A brand is built by a consistent presentation of who you are and what you do, and it is available at every place online that someone might think to look. It is an image that you create through the creative use of the media that you have at hand – the Internet. It begins with your own website. You have to secure a unique domain name that is easy to remember and easy to enter into the address bar of the browser. Your name is a good place to begin, especially if it is fairly uncommon. If you have a common name and can’t secure the domain for it, then try adding on a word that describes what you do. For instance, Seth Lefferts is pretty unique. It was easy for me to secure it. John Smith is not. However, John Smith Author or John Smith Novelist, John Smith Nutrition Coach might be available. The use of your name is recommended, because it is what people remember about you and that is what they are going to think of first, and, in most cases, that is unique and is what they are going to search for first. Have you searched for yourself? It is truly a eye-opening experience.

How to Make a Facebook Like Page for Personal Branding

Once you have secured your domain name, which is now your branding name, it is time to start building your online presence. If you already have a Facebook page, that will be your Personal page. Your business page will be done as a “Like” page, which used to be called a “Fan” page, but it is yet another thing that the minds behind Facebook deemed worthy of changing to confuse us all. Suffice it to say that now, for branding purposes, you will make a Facebook Like page.

Many people make the classic mistake of marketing their business on their personal page, thinking that this is the place to begin, but it is not the place where people come to get pitched on a business. It is more like a casual cocktail party or a grand scale reunion where they are catching up on the whereabouts and activities of their online community; their circle of friends. Facebook has extended our circle to include long lost school and work friends from all times in our past, relatives around the world, old neighbors, and new acquaintances from all walks of life. Your personal page is a great place to connect with people and to drive them to your business page; your Like page. Once you make a Facebook Like page, it is here that you will establish your brand for all to see.

When you start to make a Facebook Like page, the first thing to do is enter www.facebook.com/pages into your browser address bar. Once you are there, click the +Create Page button at the upper right. At this point you will have to choose the type of page you want to create. For the home-based business entrepreneur (if that is you) it may turn out to be the Brand page or the Artist page. The question that you need to answer right now as you make a Facebook Like page is who you intend to be in your online presence? Will you be an author, speaker or other public figure? How are you going to market your brand? Once you choose, you are on your way.

While you make a Facebook Like page, it is prudent to make the site private until you have completed at least a minimum of content. What you create for this page, such as your picture and your bio, will also become the content for your press kits, your other online bios, features on your home page and so on. Remember, the keyword here is consistency. Choose wisely, because in most cases you will end up living with these choices for the rest of your business days. Establishing a brand is accomplished through repetition and consistency. This includes the Username of this particular Like page as well. If you are multi-faceted in your abilities, such as an author, photographer and musician, you will probably end up having Like pages for each facet of your professional life. As you make a Facebook Like page, it is vital that you choose your direction wisely!

Once you have loaded up a minimum of content, your history, your affiliations, your pictures, your interests and other personal and professional information, you are ready to launch your Like page. At this time you should choose to notify your Facebook friends. Ask them to visit your page and click the Like button to start building your community. Now you are ready to start attracting new people and getting them excited about your business through creative and ever-changing content. Your time is your most valuable commodity so spend it on moneymaking activities that will help to bring in new clients and customers. Your brand is built by integrity, respect and consistency. Make your long range plan and make this one of the first steps toward reaching your goals and becoming the successful entrepreneur that you are.

Finally, keep in mind that things change on the internet and, seemingly, Facebook especially these days. While the principles will always be the same, if you’re about to make a Facebook like page for branding purposes, check to see that technical things haven’t changed!

You keep failing. It’s hard to hide at this point. What does it say about you when you keep failing? What are you going to do?

These are all reasonable questions to ask when you’re in a rough spot, finding, time and again, that things just keep not working out.

It’s true that some people are simply afraid of success. In fact, they actually feel comfortable with their lack of success. After all, if they didn’t have some sort of sorry tale to tell, what would they talk about?

But that’s not you…

You Keep Failing, But You’re Not Alone

Compared to Abraham Lincoln, do you really keep failing?

So, you see, Lincoln had to take it upon himself to persevere, over and over. Success is rarely an easy path and what really counts, what really makes a difference is typically difficult. Otherwise, everyone would be doing it and it wouldn’t be all that special.

What does the fact that you keep failing say about you?

Are you and Lincoln all that different? You keep failing, as did he. All kidding aside, failure is a natural element on the path to success. Failure, in many regards should be respected. You took a chance. You created an opportunity from which to learn. You grow from your failures on the road to success.

So, rest assured, you will continue to make mistakes, keep failing. And, if you are who I think you are – reading to this point in this post – you will learn a few things along the way. As long as you persevere – don’t quit – you will reach your goal.

And it will be SWEET!

Michael Clouse: Know your Why

Michael Clouse is a Certified Network Marketing Professional, the first that I have ever encountered. He is an engaging speaker who knows exactly how to get the listener focused on the right things in their lives and business. For instance, one of his keynote speeches is about Knowing your Why. We have talked about this here at DrewBerman.com for years. You have to have passion behind your reason for doing anything, especially building a Network Marketing business. We hear that and we all know that, but Michael Clouse takes it a big step further by asking if we really know what our reason Why is all about. Can you identify it in such detail that you have no doubt about each action step that you take? Is your focus really on your dream or is it focused on simply wanting more money? Do you want a stack of paper or do you have a dream that is motivated by your Why?

Michael Clouse suggests 90-day planning periods

Another extremely powerful point that Michael Clouse has to share is his training on making your Plan. He makes the point that if you have a plan that covers too long a period of time, say twenty years, or ten years, or one year for that matter, that you will find it overwhelming and difficult to achieve. He recommends that we all make our plans in 90 day segments. 90 days. That is a very reasonable time frame in which to set goals that are attainable and take action steps to reach them. As he points out, if you are sitting in the doldrums of Winter stuck in your house for three months, it is easy to look forward to Spring knowing that it is coming up in a month or two. Changes happen around us in smaller timeframes than a year or two, or ten. 90 days is a manageable timeframe. Real progress can be measured. At the end of 90 days the Plan can be reviewed and adjusted based on achievements and things learned along the way.

Here we are in the second week of 2012. It is a perfect time to be planning the next three months. If you know why you want to build your business, then you can figure out the math that it will take to get you to your goal. Set a realistic goal for three months from now. Where do you want to be on April first? The only one who will see it as April Fools Day is the one who didn’t make a real plan based on a real why. Promoting your business in the new year!

What’s the story about freedom anyway? If everyone is so busy, how does your business fit into their life? Most people are busy being busy, with no end result in mind. When you introduce your business, they say they are too busy. Too busy doing what? They think it might be just another business, just another thing to add to their to-do list.

They are missing the big picture.

You can teach people that not only can they make money with your business, but they can build it in such a way that it gives them time freedom as well.

Wow! What a concept!

You can create income, without being tied to a desk. Do you know anyone with golden handcuffs? The more you lead with business, and the business potential, the more you will attract leaders. These leaders will build an organization for themselves, which inevitably pays you. J. Paul Getty, one of the wealthiest men of his time, said this, “I would rather have 1% of 100 people’s efforts than 100% of my own efforts”. So how do you create freedom? Just create more income than expenses… Is it that easy? Yes. It took me 10 months. Ten months of working my business 10-20 hours a week, ended up making me more money then selling advertising for 60 hours a week. Hmmmm. Maybe freedom is not your goal. Then what is?

How to prepare yourself for success in the new year…

Here are some things to think about for 2012.

In your future journal, the one you will live into, the one dated Dec 31, 2012, the one that starts “I am so thankful because …”. How does it read?

Try this on for size…

It is December 31, 2012.
I am so thankful because….
I am so happy because …
My weight is -
My income is -
My marriage is -
My business is -
My health is -
My hobbies are -

Can you see it? More importantly, can you feel it?

Once you have this, then make goals accordingly throughout the new year. Determine a cost to what you want, then divide it by your compensation plan’s units (in my business, we call them “cycles”), then make goals. After you do that, share your goals with your upline support team.

When it comes to income, I get paid in “cycles” right? So – here are some questions to think about:

How many cycles, per week, by Dec 31, 2012?
By your annual company meeting?
By March?
How many personal enrollments in January?
How many “Consultants” (or whatever your first level of achievement is)?
By when will you be “Star Consultant” (second level)?
By when will you be “Executive” (third level)?
How many “Executives” do you want to have with you at your annual meeting?
If you answer these questions, and you share them with your upline support team… then – you will hit them – right? Right!

When you are part of a team and a community such as Millionaires In Action, the Isagenix team based in the greater New York area, you have access to amazing guest speakers such as Bill Mayer on the team call every Monday night. Surely, week after week there have been great speakers who have imparted their wisdom concisely and precisely in the thirty minutes that they are given. This past Monday night’s call with Bill Mayer, the life coach and author of “The Magic in Asking the Right Questions”, however, touched me more deeply than most. Bill learned long ago that everything changes when you start asking the right questions.

When Bill Mayer started the call he put forth a thought that particularly resonated with me. He asked us all to think about this statement:

My thoughts control my life and my questions control my thoughts. Therefore, when I master my questions, I master my thoughts and, in doing so, I master my life.

Bill Mayer: we all have a very judgmental “little voice”

We all have a little voice inside of our heads that is incessantly describing our cognitive experience of the world around us, and it is usually being very judgmental about our actions and reactions to the events in our lives. How often does the little voice inside of your head come back around to what worries you, or what is wrong with the way you are doing things? We are our own worst critics. It is what this voice is saying that Bill Mayer addresses in his coaching, and he put it very eloquently in the short time that he shared with us.

Bill Mayer: 4 Things to Master

There are four things that Bill Mayer says we need to master in our lives to overcome our “little voice” and achieve our dreams, bring happiness and joy into our daily experiences. These start when you Master Your Questions. It is vital to start each day by asking yourself, “what am I thankful for right now?” “What’s great about this?” “How can I make this fun?” Quiet that little voice by instructing it to ask these questions to find the pleasure and joy in everything that you do.

Next, he instructed us to Master Your Focus. Bill Mayer quoted one of my favorite speakers, Dr. Wayne Dyer, who says, “Where your focus goes, your energy flows.” If you focus on the bills that you have to pay, or the people who bring angst into your life, then, guess what? That kind of negative energy is what you will have come into your life that day. There is no joy in that. We have to take stock in what we spend our time focusing on. We are energy beings and we attract energy through our focus.

When you master your questions to master your focus, then you will Master Your Emotions. Most people don’t realize that they actually choose how they react to emotional stimuli. When an event occurs that triggers the juices inside the human body to evoke a sensation that is then interpreted by the brain, we then feel an emotion. In most cases it is actually the unconscious mind that decides whether to be overcome by it, or to feel it and act responsibly. When we become conscious of this and act with intent, then this is mastering our emotions. Direct the inner voice to stop with the alarms and overwhelm. To learn how to be the master is what changes our lives. Then, and only then, can we achieve that final mastery, which is to Master Your Life. Bill Mayer suggests that we all have this capability within us. It is just a matter of becoming aware of it and taking these action steps to deal with it. Success and joy in life will follow!

MLM Tips for 2012

Did you know that experienced network marketers will have their best month in December whereas amateurs pack it in for the month? What is the cost of losing that momentum? December forms the foundation for, carries the momentum of, and creates the continuity for the upcoming year. Unfortunately, most networkers pack up by the 10th of the month. Are you ready to pack it in and risk losing out on massive opportunity plus risk never being able to ramp up the momentum as the new year gets under way? Heck, you still have 2 weeks left in the month! One of the best MLM tips I can give you: don’t blow that time away!

Year-End MLM Tips Includes Tax Implications

Also, among these MLM Tips, are tax implications – especially this year. Did you know that the IRS will pay up to $5,000 of initial start-up costs of a home-based business? It’s true, “UNCLE SAM” will help pay for the cost for you to start a new business! It ENDS THIS YEAR, however! So, if folks are waiting until January to come on as a new representative, you might explain that this is the reason you DON’T want to do that!

Costs incurred during the START-UP PHASE of a business are generally deductible over a 15 year period (i.e. each $1,500 in start-up costs would be deducted at a rate of $100 per year for 15 years). [IRC Sec 195(c)(1)(A)]

What is the “Special Deduction” for 2011?

Any taxpayer who begins operation of a new business in 2011, may deduct ALL start-up costs (up to $5,000 maximum) on their 2011 tax returns – no need to spread the deduction over a 15 year period. [IRC Sec 195(b)]

MLM Tips: call it quits now and lose momentum until February!

Taxes aside, at the same time as the inexperienced call it quits, the experienced networker is saying, “Fine by me!” Let them quit for now — it reduces my “competition” by 90%+. As mentioned before, that 90% will also spend the first 6 weeks of next year trying to rekindle their and their team’s enthusiasm because they lost all of their momentum, their continuity. That means they are, in essence, out of commission from December 10th until the middle of February, giving us experienced folks and people who know the December Phenomenon an incredible advantage over those who have closed their business for two months!

After all is said and done, about 20% of the people that we talk to are serious candidates. 80% are not.

In months like June and July — any month except December — the 80% give us lame excuses. They say things like, “I have to fix my porch;” “I’m saving for vacation;” “I just got back from vacation.” The list goes on and on — we’ve heard them all. Yet, we press on and keep talking to people. In December, however, that same 80% has an easy cop-out excuse: “Give me a call after the holidays.” What actually happens is inexperienced network marketers hear the same excuse over and over rather than a bunch of different excuses and begin to actually believe that nobody wants to talk to them until after the holidays! They believe the collective consciousness of the 80% and call it quits! Realize the fact that this seasonal cop-out excuse is actually just the same excuse as all the others but, perhaps, in disguise.

The magic in these MLM Tips is that the 20% that come to the table in the other months are “pretty interested” and the 20% that come to the table in December are highly interested, ready to buy, and ready to join. Why is that??? Just using a little common sense, ask yourself, what month of the year does a lack of money and a lack of time resonate the most? December. The 20% that are interested in December are likely to be more interested than average because they’re interested on top of the potential lack of time and money!

Your team is your most appreciated asset. And they appreciate you too! They look to you for guidance and direction. With these MLM tips, help them to appreciate the fact that December is going to be their time to shine. Plus, if the above MLM tips are put in place and implemented correctly, next year will be the team’s best year ever, and it’s really easy if they just follow this simple suggestion.

Meet with your teammates and ask them if they want next year to be a record year. Have them write or re-write a goal statement. Go over their goals with them, taking their goal statement and scheduling 8-10 hours of calls with them during the first 2 +/- weeks of December, helping them where they need improvement. Since December is such an easy month to recruit and you’ve made 18-24 hours of calls with people they have to many things going on, sign-ups, getting people started etc., the result is a skilled, growing, and authentically optimistic team when January 1st comes along. Of course, it’s never too late to start…so start now!

While others scramble to get their team re-started, you and your teams take these MLM tips, strategize, and implement and pull further and further away! How sweet it will be!
