Have you ever wondered why a child, when told not to do something, turns around and does just that? You might say, “don’t touch that lamp,” only to find the child with their hands all over the lamp just moments later! It doesn’t make any sense!!! Or does it? In actuality, the child doesn’t likely have a negative attitude. As it turns out, the human subconscious — in kids and adults — works less intuitively than we might think. Here’s how to use it to our advantage.
When the aforementioned child hears “don’t touch that lamp,” the words that actually register are “touch that lamp”. It’s just the natural part of our psyche at work here. It seems to want to choose to do the opposite of what it hears. Is this reactance? Anticonformity? It’s probably elements of both and maybe other labeled psychological theories but the fact of the matter is it’s real. Ask any parent.
David Wood, a mentor that I’ve learned from through MLSP, said on a webinar training call last night, “You can’t not think about what you don’t want to think about without thinking about it.” Think about it!
Let’s call it the “pink elephant theory”. If I told you not to think about a pink elephant, before you know it, you’re thinking about a pink elephant! You can’t not think about the pink elephant, even when told not to think about the pink elephant, without thinking about the pink elephant. In fact, you have a mental image of a pink elephant right now! Perhaps it’s even complete with a moving trunk and ears, maybe some noise, and you might even be contemplating what shade of pink! Amazing, and I specifically told you not to think about it!
So what does this have to do with a negative attitude?
If you read my previous blog, Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life, you should now be able to appreciate the power of positive thinking. If, on the other hand, you find yourself facing challenging circumstances, find a way to phrase your thoughts and words in such a way that you utilize your psyche’s natural ability to process like the child above, touching the lamp.
For example, rather than facing financial challenges and saying or thinking, “I’m broke,” recalibrate your phraseology and say or think, “I’m not financially free yet.” Do you see the difference between these two??? The first, leaves no room for reinterpretation by your subconscious. The second allows your subconscious to “hear,” “I’m financially free yet.” This will, over time, enable you, rather than disable you. The power of words is amazing!
So if the cards you’re dealt aren’t particularly rosy for this hand and you’re temporarily overcome with a negative attitude, recalibrate your thoughts and words such that you can benefit from the words you’re saying and thinking. You may find an abundance of positivity coming your way!
Best to you!

Reframing our thoughts can change our life
Drew, great article, I retweeted it. I guess that is what the law of attraction is all about right, focus on what you want and not on what you don't…. and do the work toward you goal.
A dream will always stay just a dream until you place the power of positive thinking behind it. Taking steps to making a dream a reality, even in the face of impossibility, can turn the impossible into the possible – the power of positive thinking and taking action.
Thank you, Drew, for the fun and informative point of view.
Hey Drew! I found the title of this one – how to have a negative attitude – a little misleading! I mean, heck, you always distill the positive in EVERYTHING! But the reality is that sometimes things in life aren't optimal. That's ok and I understand that how I react to these suboptimal things is key! This post, however, takes that notion and further tunes it by encouraging the use of words to positively affect my reaction, perspective, and attitude. Dude, that's awesome! Thanks!
Thanks, Dave. You really understood what I was shooting for here with the play on words! Very powerful!
Words – whether spoken or thought – are powerful! Use them wisely, Seth!
You bet it is Shawn! Thanks for the retweet! Hope to talk soon!
Absolutely, that reminds me of another post I wrote: http://blog.drewberman.com/millionaire-mind/change-your-thinking-change-your-life/
