As always, it is a time of celebration, but it is also a time of reflection, especially since I have seen so many of these trips. These events are really getting harder; not because of how I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally, but because I am only three trips away from my 6th decade! I have always thought of that as old. However, I look and feel much younger, and that is because of what I eat (very much so) and what I do to stay active and keep young. A lot of that is due to my attitude towards life. Attitude! Now that is an amazing word. It packs so much meaning into life.

When I was fresh out of college I answered a newspaper ad about being self-motivated and ready to be my own boss. I needed some income, since I was a starving musician. It turned out to be an encyclopedia company (the best one, by the way). I said to myself “I can do this” so I signed up and was trained by one of the best people in the direct sales industry that I have ever met. I soon found myself out on the road, after having lined up appointments for the day, and giving presentations. In a few months I had sold 23 sets of books. They said it was great. I thought that it was miserable. Sure, I found out that I could sell things, like encyclopedias, but it was a hard sell and not too much fun overall. The one thing that my support person and trainer kept asking me was “how’s your attitude?” He was right. As soon as my attitude soured, so did my job and my outlook. I quit.

Soon afterward, one of my most influential music teachers, an inspirational Sufi master, asked me at my first lesson, when he was evaluating whether or not he wanted me as a student, “what do you strive for in life?” I answered “happiness”. He then posed a new scenario for me. He said, “Happiness automatically includes unhappiness, because that is how it is measured. I would urge you to seek completion instead. When you complete something that you have started, you automatically feel happiness and there is no unhappiness.” Wow! That created one of the biggest attitude adjustments in my life! I have lived by that credo ever since and have found amazing happiness in my completion of things. It is how I have learned to stick with something until I have made it my own.

Now, what does this have to do with Jim Rohn? He was one of the greatest trainers in the network marketing industry, helping many achieve lifestyle and success. He was a true master. In his wonderful book “Excerpts from the Treasury of Quotes” that was given to me for my Trip-Around-the-Sun-Anniversary-Celebration (notice how I am avoiding a certain word), by my friend and mentor, Drew Berman, I found many positive quotes that completely embodied my life experience with attitude. Sure, there are about 1000 positive quotes in this wonderful little book that will resonate with me, but I just happened to open it up to this onein particular that read, “Happiness is not an accident, nor is it something that you wish for. Happiness is something you design.” From an entire book of positive quotes, that is the one I opened to?!?! Right on, Jim! You are now one of my new masters.

And so, my final thought for this moment to impart to you, because attitude has been so important to me in my life, is to ask you, “How’s your attitude?”
While listening to The Psychology of Asking, by Jeffery Combs, I heard something that stood out, “think of your prospect’s questions as carefrontational questions”. It’s where you care for yourself enough not to get confrontational with your quality leads. If you confront your leads each time they ask a question, you might as well stop prospecting, call it quits on Network Marketing and just declare it a scam like so many others have. Remember, like you may have been, your leads and prospects may not be educated enough to fully understand everything that the Network Marketing business model offers. Many people pass a negative judgment on the Direct Sales industry based on what they may have heard rather than personal experience. Others may have had an unskilled leader who left a negative but lasting impression upon them. Knowingly or unknowingly, leads and prospects are looking to align with a leader who can answer their questions in a relaxed, informative and fun manner. If you can’t lead them to the point where they want to be around you, how can you lead them to build a business? After all, they’re looking for someone to build a business with and everyone knows that means spending a lot of time together.

Are you someone people want to spend time with?

So, make the questions and answers fun! So many people ask me, “What do I say when someone says _______?” I really don’t know. There’s tone, attitude and a number of other elements that I’d have to see, feel and experience before knowing what I would say. I do know I wouldn’t go into defense mode. I also wouldn’t just “read from a canned script” like outsourced customer tech support? Answer questions where the person may say to themselves, “I never thought about that”, “I didn’t know that” or “that’s funny”. Worst case scenario, make it so the person thinks to them self, “they seem pretty confident, relaxed and didn’t get defensive, maybe I should look into this.”

Also, find information and then make answering questions fun! Take the “SCAM” question/comment for example. You know that anyone raising that question is going by “hearsay” rather than personal experience. If it were experience, then it wouldn’t be phrased in the form of a question. Can you think of at least one industry that people generally trust which also has some scandal, corruption, or some flavor of cheating and scamming within it? Then, put the SCAM question back on them and make it informative and fun rather than defensive and crabby! I’m interested to hear if you know of one industry that doesn’t have some issues and please let me know if you do! Please comment below!!!

The key is to find interesting facts and put the questions back on the prospects but don’t do it confrontationally. I aligned with an incredible nutrition company in the MLM industry so I connect with many people concerned about their health and making sure they know what goes into their body. I even work with professional athletes now. It is often that the SCAM question comes up when prospecting in this niche, “Isn’t Network Marketing a SCAM – How do I know what’s in these products?”

Here are only a few of 20-30 plus disturbing facts about restaurants from waiters that I can pull from to put enough concern into them about the rest of the world’s industries and to have them realize I care. Again, because I’m with a nutrition company, I often use restaurants. Do you know anyone who eats at restaurants???

If you’re a vegetarian and you ask if we use vegetable stock, I’m going to say yes, even if we don’t. You’ll never know the difference.
-Anonymous

At a lot of restaurants, the special is whatever they need to sell before it goes bad. Especially watch out for the soup of the day. If it contains fish or if it’s some kind of “gumbo,” it’s probably the stuff they’re trying to get rid of.
-Kathy Kniss, who waited tables for ten years in Los Angeles

Now that I’ve worked in a restaurant, I never ask for lemon in a drink. Everybody touches them. Nobody washes them. We just peel the stickers off, cut them up, and throw them in your iced tea.
-Charity Ohlund, Kansas City waitress

Skim milk is almost never skim milk. Very few restaurants outside Starbucks carry whole milk, 2 percent milk, skim milk, and half-and-half; it’s just not practical.

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://blog.drewberman.com/perfect-business/network-marketing/every-master-was-once-a-disaster-part-3/"></g:plusone>

I have learned a lot of lessons along the way and I always stayed in action. Doing something is better then doing nothing. Always correct and continue, correct and continue. Learn how to get feedback not only from others but also from yourself. Here’s a tip: after a project, conversation, or event, here are 3 questions to ask to learn and improve for next time. What worked? What didn’t work? What can be done better? These will keep you constantly improving. It’s not about perfection – it’s about progress. Keep on keepin’ on is a good motto. Here are 4 magic-Jedi-wizard questions that can triple your business.

Who are my ideal associates, consultants, customers, partners (or fill in the blank)?

Where are they?

What makes them tick (what do they think about, read, etc)

The magic is in the 4th question – What do I have to do, change, or improve to attract more of them?

Put these on a piece of paper, answer them in a different color, and read it when you wake up and before you go to sleep – for 90 days. The people you are looking for will magically show up in your life. Just remember – when you see these “gurus” on stage - they were not born that way. I teach my team that this can be a very expensive hobby – but a very, very lucrative business. All you need is the triangle of success: RK + RY+ RV – the Right Knowledge + the Right YOU + the Right Vehicle. And you can win, and win big.

To your success, Drew

Wow – this may have been one of the best interviews we have ever had. We learned about capture pages, opt-in, membership sites, newsletters (that is soooo 2008), how to connect to your audience, the art of EDUTATION – combining entertainment and education, and how to be relatable – both on and offline. We live in a world of high tech and high touch. No matter how good you get at internet marketing, at the end of the day, you are still going to have to talk to people.

<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://blog.drewberman.com/golden-nuggets/the-3-best-concerts-i-ever-missed/"></g:plusone>

When I was studying in Madrid, Spain, I had tickets to see Bruce Springsteen. That would have been fun. When I graduated college, I had tickets to see Pink Floyd in Washington DC. That would have been a lot of fun. And last night, I had tickets to see PHISH at Jones Beach. That would have been a whole lot of fun. My wife and son were in bed, sick with the flu. I had been caring for them all day. She insisted I go, because the rest of the night looked like medicine and bed, they would be ok. I waited until the last minute, promised I would come home if needed, and left. Ahhh Jones Beach, sun setting, moon coming out, the world famous giant obelisk in the background. WOW!!! And then I got the phone call…they needed me and so I bailed. Great decision!!! My son is better today, my wife was grateful, she is in now in bed resting. My lesson? No matter what happens, have a great attitude. In life and in business people cancel, get sick, and sometimes they don’t show up for appointments. How do you make the best of it? How is your attitude in spite of your circumstances? I actually had a great time last night. An adventure to LI, saw some friends, got out of the city for a couple of hours, and back home taking care of my family. Today I am rested and thankful for a good decision. My reward? My friend is going to get me the recording of the show.
