If you are in business for yourself and you want to build your online presence you know that it’s wise to make a Facebook Like page for personal or business branding. After all, Facebook is here to stay and it is something that you have to reckon with. No matter what business you are in, the main thing that you have to build is your brand. You have to become accessible to the public in such a way that people will think of you when they need the product or service that you offer. You have to become the go-to expert and consistently be appearing in their sphere of awareness. Maybe it’s a great thing, or maybe it’s a sad state of affairs, but most people spend a lot of time on Facebook. No matter how you feel about it, you have to build your professional presence within the Social Media sphere and, if you make a Facebook Like page, you’ll find it to be a great place to begin.

In the days before you had to make a Facebook Like page…

It used to be de rigueur that a brand was built through advertising and marketing utilizing expensive, repetitive and targeted media, but offline media, such as print ads, billboards, radio, television, newspapers, etc. With the advent of Social Media on the Internet there is now a way of building a brand that has very little upfront costs and virtually no ongoing expenses, except for your time (which should be valued at $500 or more when you are thinking like a millionaire!). Simply make a Facebook Like page!

Branding yourself on the Internet

A brand is built by a consistent presentation of who you are and what you do, and it is available at every place online that someone might think to look. It is an image that you create through the creative use of the media that you have at hand – the Internet. It begins with your own website. You have to secure a unique domain name that is easy to remember and easy to enter into the address bar of the browser. Your name is a good place to begin, especially if it is fairly uncommon. If you have a common name and can’t secure the domain for it, then try adding on a word that describes what you do. For instance, Seth Lefferts is pretty unique. It was easy for me to secure it. John Smith is not. However, John Smith Author or John Smith Novelist, John Smith Nutrition Coach might be available. The use of your name is recommended, because it is what people remember about you and that is what they are going to think of first, and, in most cases, that is unique and is what they are going to search for first. Have you searched for yourself? It is truly a eye-opening experience.

How to Make a Facebook Like Page for Personal Branding

Once you have secured your domain name, which is now your branding name, it is time to start building your online presence. If you already have a Facebook page, that will be your Personal page. Your business page will be done as a “Like” page, which used to be called a “Fan” page, but it is yet another thing that the minds behind Facebook deemed worthy of changing to confuse us all. Suffice it to say that now, for branding purposes, you will make a Facebook Like page.

Many people make the classic mistake of marketing their business on their personal page, thinking that this is the place to begin, but it is not the place where people come to get pitched on a business. It is more like a casual cocktail party or a grand scale reunion where they are catching up on the whereabouts and activities of their online community; their circle of friends. Facebook has extended our circle to include long lost school and work friends from all times in our past, relatives around the world, old neighbors, and new acquaintances from all walks of life. Your personal page is a great place to connect with people and to drive them to your business page; your Like page. Once you make a Facebook Like page, it is here that you will establish your brand for all to see.

When you start to make a Facebook Like page, the first thing to do is enter www.facebook.com/pages into your browser address bar. Once you are there, click the +Create Page button at the upper right. At this point you will have to choose the type of page you want to create. For the home-based business entrepreneur (if that is you) it may turn out to be the Brand page or the Artist page. The question that you need to answer right now as you make a Facebook Like page is who you intend to be in your online presence? Will you be an author, speaker or other public figure? How are you going to market your brand? Once you choose, you are on your way.

While you make a Facebook Like page, it is prudent to make the site private until you have completed at least a minimum of content. What you create for this page, such as your picture and your bio, will also become the content for your press kits, your other online bios, features on your home page and so on. Remember, the keyword here is consistency. Choose wisely, because in most cases you will end up living with these choices for the rest of your business days. Establishing a brand is accomplished through repetition and consistency. This includes the Username of this particular Like page as well. If you are multi-faceted in your abilities, such as an author, photographer and musician, you will probably end up having Like pages for each facet of your professional life. Seth Lefferts Author; Seth Lefferts Musician; Seth Lefferts Photographer. These are the usernames that you give out when directing someone to your Facebook pages; www.facebook.com/SethLeffertsAuthor. As you make a Facebook Like page, it is vital that you choose your direction wisely!

Once you have loaded up a minimum of content, your history, your affiliations, your pictures, your interests and other personal and professional information, you are ready to launch your Like page. At this time you should choose to notify your Facebook friends. Ask them to visit your page and click the Like button to start building your community. Now you are ready to start attracting new people and getting them excited about your business through creative and ever-changing content. Your time is your most valuable commodity so spend it on moneymaking activities that will help to bring in new clients and customers. Your brand is built by integrity, respect and consistency. Make your long range plan and make this one of the first steps toward reaching your goals and becoming the successful entrepreneur that you are.

Finally, keep in mind that things change on the internet and, seemingly, Facebook especially these days. While the principles will always be the same, if you’re about to make a Facebook like page for branding purposes, check to see that technical things haven’t changed!

This MLM ranking post is not going to be like others. While I’m not going to give you a list of network marketing companies ranked from the best mlm companies to the worst – how can that be objectively done anyway – I posted a question on Facebook and was, at the same time, both surprised and not surprised by the responses.

You see, I am in the network marketing industry – full disclosure. I work with people who were previously in every one of these professions. I also work with people who are still in every one of these professions. I didn’t pick these industries just willy-nilly, however. Each of these, at one point or another, are considered to allow corresponding professionals to “make it big” and create what I call “lifestyle unlimited“. The question here is, “Does it?”

In order to find that out, and to create what I’m calling an MLM ranking – albeit informally – I went to Facebook, of course!

Here is my question:

What is the best industry to get into these days? a) real estate b) network marketing c) medicine d) law e) personal trainer f) other – which has the potential to create the best lifestyle?

MLM Ranking suggests “law” under-represented

With over a dozen responses, unfortunately, nobody commented about the Law profession other than the amount of education required. Now, we all know that professionals in this arena require tremendous amounts of education and years of hard work before they really get into the big bucks. Once – if – a lawyer gets into the big money, there is a question as to what their lifestyle has become, given the late nights and time away from family, etc. Then again, maybe that is part of the goal. Anyway, I’m not speaking from experience, but perhaps it’s not all it is cracked up to be. I’d love some comments below on this!

MLM Ranking versus Real Estate

One response specifically addressed real estate:

I think Real Estate is always good, but being savvy is important at this time…

Another responded conversely:

Real Estate? are you kidding, certainly not in Florida.

MLM Ranking versus Medicine

A response from a person whom I know to be a leading NYC doctor put it bluntly:

DEFINITELY NOT Medicine!!!!

And someone else followed this up with:

We should all be scared that great docs like [...] are seeking an exit plan from medicine.

Wow! Does that sum up an MLM ranking versus the medical industry???

MLM Ranking suggests Network Marketing ROCKS!!!

By far, based on the comments I received from this question, this MLM ranking skews toward network marketing. To be fair, I expected this. What is more telling, however, are the comments – and that is what I wanted to share with you here! For example, one person responded:

Network Marketing. No special schooling, learn while you earn, minimum investment, great income potential, work part time with your present job or full time once you build it to the point where you can replace your present job if that’s what you want to do. Does that answer your question?

One of my friends, a corporate guy, responded:

Yea man, I was [a corporate guy]. Network Marketing is realistically the most ingenious business model and pay structure there is. I relate it to phones. I think of Franchises as the first Cell Phones and Network Marketing as the Iphone type phone! All the rest are like going back to a landline and rotary phone!

I was definitely “stuck” in the corp and small biz worlds for 20+ years. Stuck really is what defines those worlds and you’re stuck ALONE. If you own the small business it requires huge startup costs, personal time and you still have to market and sell your products or services on your own. If you work in a corporate company environment and you’re not at the top of the org chart then your growth is limited to what someone else “thinks”. It’s most often not performance driven. Personal financial growth is limited by factors such as levels, caps, friendships and seniority. Don’t get me wrong, you can often obtain a great salary but it’s still just enough and not too much so that they keep you.

The right Network Marketing Company screams, “Opportunity!” They say, “Here are the products, marketing and sales tools you need to grow your business, now go grow your business and let us know if you need anything.” If you want to run it like a small business you can without the thousands of $$$ needed to start. You can buy your products at wholesale prices and sell them retail just like any other retailer. Or, you can run your Network Marketing Business like the CEO of a big business without the employee limitations and millions of $$$ needed to start. Unlimited grow shared with others equaling exponential growth. You and others can make millions while the company does as well! It’s incredible.

Finally, and the last comment (to-date) supporting the network marketing industry – and I think this sums it up very concisely – was this:

I choose B – (and all the others can benefit from it too to make their incomes better)

Profound, huh?

How would your industry compare to network marketing in our MLM ranking?

I’m not naive enough to think that network marketing is for everyone but it does offer opportunities that few other industries offer. Granted, it may not be what everyone wants. Certainly there are folks out there that recognize the fact that they do NOT have entrepreneurial initiative. That’s perfectly OK. You reap what you sow.

Working in the network marketing industry is not a guarantee. Even within the network marketing industry, given the thousands of different companies in existence at any given time, some are better and some are worse – perhaps the MLM ranking that you were looking for (that probably doesn’t objectively exist!). In fact, some companies are better for certain people to align with than others. I know some folks that were unsuccessful in a dozen MLM companies before they exploded with success in another!
