In Part 1 of our series on Salesperson Types for Network Marketing we discovered that there are seven salesperson types that take part in the complex sales process happening between large companies. As the size of the business gets smaller, the sales process gets less and less complicated, which is a wonderful thing when it comes to the business of Network Marketing. This is because, by the very definition of Network Marketing, when we are actively involved in this business we are simply referring people on a one-on-one basis to take a look at our product or service. What can be more simple than that? Working one-on-one with our local and extended network of contacts.

So why is it that 94% of all Network Marketers fail to build a business of more than a few hundred dollars a month? If the sales process is as simple as it sounds, why can’t everyone who tries to build a business in this industry become financially independent, as the opportunity originally presents itself? There is no one answer to this question, however, the bottom line is our own effectiveness as a salesperson.

In “Hope Is Not A Strategy”, by Rick Page, he discusses the different salesperson types that are required in today’s business world to handle a complex sale. It used to be pretty simple — a salesperson meets with a potential buyer and they would discuss the product or service, the delivery time and the price. If everything looked right, then an order was placed and all was great. However, in today’s world where you can pretty much find anything on the Internet at a great price, there is a lot of competition for the business.

In the corporate culture there is a lot of politics that tend to get in the way of efficiency. Many times there is a good intention to buy a product or service that could increase the efficiency of the business and potentially boost profits while reducing expenses. In today’s complex sale, with the process of purchasing spread out over the different levels of the business, the seller now needs different salesperson types to address the sale at both low and high levels within the buying organization.

Network marketing, while more simple than the complex sale, still has a bit of a twist to it!

Salesperson Types

Mr. Page theorizes that there are seven salesperson types required to handle this type of complex sale. These are:

1. Teller – the person who will describe all of the features
2. Seller – the person who will consult with the buyer as to their pain and needs
3. Hunter – the person who will address the competition
4. Farmer – the person who will stay with the buyer for repeat business
5. Business Developer – the person who will generate future sales with the buyer
6. Partner – the person who will deal with management politics
7. Industry Consultant – the person who is connected to a large network in the industry giving credibility to the seller at the buyer’s executive level

This is all well and good for the complex sale to the multi-level corporation, which requires buy-in from multiple levels of the organization before a purchase can be authorized and completed. The question is, what salesperson types are best for Network Marketing?

What is Network Marketing?

Perhaps the best place to begin is by truly understanding what Network Marketing is. In the corporate structure, there is a multi-level organization with the authority and grand share of the money concentrated at the top with a small set of people. Most people in this type of structure make a little bit of the money and have very little say in what they can do, or when they are able to do it.

Network Marketing is the exact opposite. Yes, to be a part of a Network Marketing program you take your place in the multi-level structure, similar to a corporate structure, however, in this case, you get to set your own hours, decide how you are going to approach your work, and the potential for making the money rests entirely with you and is virtually unlimited. Network Marketing is more about sharing products and the opportunity with others who may want to take on their own business as their own boss. It is self-motivated and self-actualized.

Salesperson Types for Network Marketing

In the Network Marketing business, everyone is your potential customer. It goes back to the simple sale model. When you interact with someone and you bring up the business you are acting as a salesperson, whether you think of it this way or not, but the real truth lies in that you are always a salesperson, selling yourself and your ideas to others. When you tell someone about a movie you loved, or a restaurant you love, you are presenting your opinion about a product or a service that you feel strongly about. You are selling through a referral, but you aren’t going to get any commissions from this type of sales. In this case, you are the Teller.

So what is so different about you telling someone about your product or service? The answer is that you are invested in your business and you hope to get paid for it. Therefore, you are asking for this person to commit to a financial transaction. Now why is it so hard to ask this for so many people? Many people are uncomfortable with asking someone else to spend their money in a way that will profit themselves, but isn’t that why we join a business in the first place? Isn’t that what we are doing as a retail salesperson (Farmer), or as a service provider (Seller and Farmer)? We are not doing it as a low or mid level employee of a corporation. We are trading our time for their money, and not a lot of it.

The best of all salesperson types for the Network Marketing industry is the Seller, which is a consultative salesperson type. There is always a bit of the Teller, but simply telling people the features of your business is not a winning strategy. It is time consuming and something that can be best done on their own time to their own level of content. The Seller is the one who simply describes the business in simple terms and asks for the sale.

Yet there is more to it than this. Actually, the biggest part of being a successful Seller is knowing how to listen. The way to create sales is to identify the pain or real need of the prospective buyer and to link the product and opportunity to that pain. This is accomplished by asking the right questions and listening well, though key for all salesperson types! There is very little to tell when you have asked the right question and you know where to direct your words.

The really successful of all salesperson types in most businesses, at least for closing the sale, is the Hunter. This is the person who asks the right questions, addresses the pain and can explain why this opportunity is better than the competition, and then drive hard for closing the sale. This is aggressive sales and will result in a lot of new business, but the resulting organization will tend to be made up of long legs without the bandwidth to build a long term sustaining and growing business. The Hunter can never be the Farmer, who is necessary for nurturing the relationships and growing a wide and stable base of repeat customers.

So, what are the best Salesperson Types for Network Marketing?

In reality, there are no “best” salesperson types for Network Marketing. The ideal person is the Seller with a nice blend of Teller, Farmer and Hunter. Virtually anyone can be the Seller, since this is the same as recommending a great movie or restaurant. This is known as consultative sales. The only thing that the Seller must learn is how to ask the right questions, including asking for the sale. There is a little of the Teller, but usually telling their own personal story with passion and conviction (selling). There is a lot of the Farmer in building a wide and stable repeat customer base, which is the nurturing part of the business. There is a little of the Hunter to overcome the little voice that is constantly telling you ‘why you can’t do this’.

The other salesperson types are best left to be realized through the resources of your company and your support team; with the Internet, three-way calls, webinars, articles from the experts, testimonials, and so many other ways to develop and grow the business.

The reason you joined your Network Marketing company was so you could be your own boss, have unlimited earning potential and to free yourself from past restrictions on your own personal growth and income. It is a small step from being the Teller to becoming the Seller. It is the difference of learning to ask questions instead of hearing your own voice.

As we bid another year adieu, we should look back at our accomplishments proudly, our failures with our heads held high, and our MLM mistakes as opportunities for growth in the coming year. We’ve accomplished a lot this year and, at the same time, we’ve taken risks. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don’t. After all is said and done, however, as the saying goes, if we don’t learn from our mistakes, we’re bound to repeat them! What follows is a list of mistakes I’ve watched many network marketers make over the years. Unfortunately, even I have fallen prey to some of them! Don’t let these MLM mistakes happen to you!

The 12 Biggest MLM Mistakes

1. Elevate prospects over yourself…
   Never talk to prospects as if their time is more important than your own. In fact, let them know it is a privilege to be on your team and that you don’t just accept anyone to work with you.  After all, not everyone is worth your time.  Common among the many MLM mistakes, don’t be overly concerned with what your prospect thinks.  While their opinion has value, it is not necessarily more valuable than your own.  Make prospects qualify for your time.  Your time is valuable so don’t take this qualification process lightly.  As you know, some will, some won’t, someone’s waiting…!
2. Sell, instead of attract…
   “I know you’ll be good at this!”  The fact of the matter is that you don’t know if someone will be good at network marketing until they step up to the plate and hit the ball.  Heck, as long as they swing constantly, they’re bound to connect at some point.  Unfortunately, you’ll never know until you know.  You’re looking for people who are looking for you.  You could find the right person at the right time.  Clearly, you may come across the right person at the wrong time and, you know what, it’s not going to work.  This is as important as any of the MLM mistakes — don’t try to drag people in. If you act like you need them, you won’t be able to lead them and they will never follow you anyway. If you want to attract certain people, become that person that you’re trying to attract.  Either the opportunity is for the person or not. If they say “convince me,” tell them they have the wrong person.
3. Talk too much…
   Stop talking!  Talking to much is one of the biggest MLM mistakes! Master the art of the pause.  Use the systems already in place to do the talking for you.  It doesn’t matter much who you are — or who you think you are — systems put in place without all of the pressure of the sale, without all the pressure of sitting in front of a prospect — that will win far more often than not.  Accept the fact that you don’t have all the answers.  In fact, you may simply turn your prospect away by flubbing your way through partial truths.  Please, stop talking!
4. Make your opportunity sound too good to be true or too easy…
   Facts are facts, if network marketing — like anything else — were so easy, everyone would be doing it and everyone would be knocking the cover off the ball.  Network marketing isn’t for everyone.  It’s not always easy.  It takes hard work and perseverance.  Do you only want to bring people into your team who decided to join because it’s easy or do you want people who will work hard to become successful.  Network marketing concepts and principles are simple, but not easy.
5. Make prospects or teammates comfortable…
   Under most circumstances, “comfort” has gotten them to the mediocre place that they are now.  That’s why they’re struggling.  That’s why they’re listening to you.  Make them uncomfortable temporarily – make them think.  The next time you hear, “I don’t have the $$$,” respond with, “How much longer do you want that to be your story? If you don’t have it now, when will you have it? When is your story going change?  There has to come a time when $500 is not a lot of money.”  The next time you ask, “Are you going to [the next big event]?”  And you get,  “No,” in response.  Make them feel uncomfortable with, “That’s unfortunate because, if you were going, here’s what you’d get.”
6. Neglect upline support…
   Inexperienced network marketers might avoid their upline thinking, “I don’t want to bother them.”  People who are experienced in network marketing will say they don’t need upline support.  These MLM mistakes are profound! For the inexperienced, the upline is there to make you successful.  For the experienced, you don’t call on your upline to get the job done.  You call on them to show your prospect or downline how it’s done.  Someone who is new to marketing may not be as good as you.  However, if you show them the system with using upline support, it makes it doable.
7. Send negative messages…
   Never complain about something to downline teammates. Simply put, sending negativity down the line will only amplify.  Nothing good will come of that.  Always take complaints to your upline.  They will likely have the ability to help you do something to fix the issue.
8. Tell without asking…
   Generally speaking, people who are excited about something — passionate — are ready, willing, and able to babble about it for hours with anyone.  Self control goes a long way!  We need to talk less (see #3 in this list of MLM mistakes) and listen more.  Seek out their “why” and, if you don’t hear it eventually, ask for it. “Why are you looking at this opportunity?”  “What caused you to look at this?”  “Why have we attracted each other?”
9. Edify the prospect instead of the upline…
   As I pointed out in #1 in this list of 12 MLM mistakes, you will come across so many prospects that will serve to have little to no value to your business.  Conversely, your upline is very important to the growth of your business.  Why treat a prospect with more respect than your upline?  That just makes no business sense.  Perhaps it should go like this, “Mr. Prospect, I’m about to introduce you to one of our power team leaders who achieved … and built … Ms. Power Team Leader, Mr. Prospect just listened to the call….”
10. Interrupt the upline on a call…
    Honestly, interrupting anyone on a call — or in person, for that matter — is rude.  Your upline team members are business partners.  They’re good at what they do.  They don’t need reminders of what to say and likely have a plan and know what is effective when they say or don’t say something in particular.  Never interrupt the upline on a call by saying “oh tell him this”.  If your downline team member interrupts you, hang up the phone and let them finish the call. They won’t interrupt again.
11. Look for “needers” instead of leaders…
    People should have people skills and business acumen. After all, you’re looking to build a business.  Don’t look only for people who need help.  Those who need help will likely drag on your resources tremendously and probably wont ever be on their own anyway.  You want to attract leaders who are ready, willing, and able to take the ball and run with it!
12. Don’t spend enough time promoting events…
    Your business is built from event to event.  This is cardinal among all of these MLM mistakes — you must attend and promote events constantly.  You will meet the greatest prospects, business partners, and mentors at events.  You never know what the seeds you plant now could turn into down the road…from a simple conversation started at an event.

Mike Dillard has become one of the icons in the world of internet marketing. He is an introverted, self-effacing man with a tell-it-like-it-is attitude. He is not one to take the spotlight, surprisingly with all of his amazing success and name recognition, and he has little patience for mainstream business practices and policies. Jim Chao

Jim started in the MLM industry when he was 18 years old, struggled for years, and pretty much failed. He is like more and more of the youth of this county who are recognizing that the job that their fathers did or do is not designed to bring them the lifestyle that they are really dreaming of. There is a strong desire to become successful as an entrepreneur and not to work in the corporate world or in the service industry for the rest of their working lives. With this in mind, Jim persisted in learning what he needed to succeed, did not give up on his dream, and it payed off. I can understand all of this. I went the corporate route for decades, but I am no longer interested in that myself. When approaching the business of marketing on the Internet it is not the same as traditional marketing and advertising that we have been bombarded with for years, on TV, in print, and on radio. These methods have been tried on the ‘Net and they are ok at best. But, that isn’t the way to become successful in the network marketing industry and marketing on the ‘Net. There is a much more sophisticated model and Jim has put together a series of videos that are for training us in the techniques that have worked for him. These are the same methods that he was taught that put him in the five-figure per month category.

It has been a while since I have brought to you a video blog so I looked into my archive and found this wonderful message, as part of my millionaire mindset series, from one of my favorite self made millionaires, Jimmy “The Butcher” Smith. Actually, this video was shot not so long ago at an event in Arizona! (If you want a look at a video of me enjoying the view over the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, let me know!) Anyway, here, in the back of a 2009 Rolls Royce Phantom, I took a moment to briefly interview Jimmy. Check out a self made millionaires message about how to make it big in network marketing. Here’s a hint, the power comes from within. I’d like to specifically notice Jimmy’s unwavering conviction. Check it out.

Self made millionaires create through passion, action, and inertia, as Jimmy states. Passion is feeling from one’s sole about something; action is doing something about it; but what does he mean by inertia? Inertia is one of the most powerful components of the elite self made millionaires. Inertia is, simply put, to keep on keeping on. Let nothing get in the way of you reaching your goals. Bad day? Brush it off and keep going. Fall down? Get up and keep going. Inertia becomes easier and easier over time as a business grows and things seem to take on a life of it’s own organically. It doesn’t start out that way. That’s why it’s imperative that you create that inertia from the onset and don’t let misfortunes sidetrack you, make you take your eye off the ball. Persevere. If you can conceive, you can believe, you can achieve.

Networking Tips

Believe it or not, the fact of the matter is that very few people enjoy networking. Even the socially capable find networking to be a chore sometimes. For those who are shy, it’s downright painful. Network marketing industry aside, with all of the economic calamities these days, nobody can afford not to network! Here are some networking tips that will make your network marketing experience a breeze!

Work the room

When out and about at networking events, as a newbie networker, it may be difficult to have impromptu conversations with strangers. Whether you’re attending a network marketing industry event, a social networking event, or a business networking event, scout the scene ahead of time, if possible. This is one of my rock-solid networking tips! Find out who will be there. Discover existing friends that may be attending (more on this in a moment). Discover industry gurus. Discover others you’d like to meet. And prepare — prepare conversations ahead of time, prepare topics of conversation, prepare entrances and exits, prepare. Surely you realize that preparation goes a long way towards success. Of course, preparation to the point of memorizing a script may just throw you off so don’t go overboard.

Bring a friend. As mentioned previously, discovering existing friends to co-mingle with at events is profound! There is power in numbers. No friends planning to attend? Bring one! Ideally, your cohort would be more outgoing that you, will push you to meet people, and maybe blow your horn a little bit for you too. Pick wisely.

One-to-one

Most importantly, don’t be a downer. Be positive and upbeat! One-to-one networking tips become magical if you network when you don’t have to. What was that? You heard it correctly. Network when you’re not in need of your network! Meet former colleagues for coffee. Schedule a lunch. Reminisce but keep it positive — always. Talk about your entrepreneurial endeavors matter-of-factly, not as a sales pitch.

Shut up! Remember the aforementioned “first and foremost of many networking tips” — you’re building relationships. Nobody wants to listen to someone else talking about themselves, their sales pitch, or their experiences all the time. Take a break and build the relationship by giving others a chance to speak. Simply listen. Really listen. Typically they will provide you plenty of opportunity for you to help them. Life is a two-way street. Eventually, your helping others will help you.

E-networking

Though there are different rules — and therefore different networking tips — for online engagement, be it on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, or any of the thousands of social networking sites on the Internet, the key is to be no different than you would be in person. Err on the side of caution when it comes to how casual your written words are since it’s a lot more difficult to understand the context of someone’s words without facial expressions, body language, etc…even with a whole host of emoticons available!

Getting introduced to someone may be a sure-fire way to connect with someone online that, perhaps, you may not have been able to otherwise. But don’t be annoying or you’ll lose that connection just as easily.

Finally, communicate. If you’re going to use online services to make connections and build relationships, do it. You will have to “talk” with people, update people, share ideas, and ask questions — just like you would talking to someone face-to-face or on the phone. The only difference is that the computer facilitates mass communication to thousands (or more!) of people at a time! And enjoy yourself. Though you’re masked by a computer, the real you is sure to come through whether you like it or not.

I hope these networking tips help you understand some ways that can help make a potentially painful newbie experience a little more bearable or, for the more experienced networker, provide some tips to hone your game. Networking is certainly an art, not a science. So get out there and build some relationships; put these networking tips to use and make your network marketing industry proud!
